authorised representatives for webOne of the LINk's legal powers is the right to enter service premises and view what is happening there. Click here for the guidance on the legal powers of LINks. These visits have to be undertaken by Authorised Representatives, who are trained for the purpose and undergo a series of checks. Sheffield LINk was one of the first in the country to train its authorised representatives and undertake visits, carrying out seven visits in ryegate childrens centrethe reporting year ending 31 March 2010.

The first was undertaken by 2 members of the Children and Young People's Committee (who qualified as Authorised Representatives) and was a visit to the Ryegate Children's Centre (left). This was essentially a fact-finding mission around the area of transitional care from childrens to adult services for those with a neurodisability.

The Access to GPs Action Group commissioned three visits to medical practices to understand more about their appointment procedures and also to investigate out-of-hours provision. There was also a visit  to Sheffield City Council's Corporate Contact Centre as part of the investigations by the Equipment & Adaptations Action Group. They were looking at the whole assessment process and wanted observe their procedures in relation to this service. There have also been visits to wards at the Hallamshire and Northern General hospitals to look at infection control measures.

In spring 2011, our new action groups on unscheduled care and on care homes for older people asked the LINk's authorised representatives to undertake more visits. So far, 19 local care homes have been visited. The unscheduled care visits so far have been to the walk-in centre in Broad Lane and the A&E department at the Northern General Hospital  Other visits are planned to the Minor Injuries Unit at the Royal Hallameshire Hospital and to the GP out-of-hours service.

Please see below for reports on each of the visits undertaken. These reports have to be agreed by the LINk and the service provider before being published which can lead to a delay.
